In an effort to work on original compositions, I have been searching for some reference material for an idea that I have for what I am calling a ‘dreamscape’.
The initial idea came from the above image in which a little girl holding balloons is standing in a field of flowers. At first I was tempted to just do an artistic copy of this image as it is, but then I decided it would be pertinent for my evolution as an artist to use this as the basis for a composed piece.
This thought process lead me to thinking about ways I would want this image to change in order to be all my own. So I decided I would switch out the sky for something a little more dramatic:
From there I thought, well, why not make this little girl more aligned to a reflection of myself as a child. So I went looking for a black flower girl.
And now, I am working on putting it together with some very scratchy thumbnails.
If I had the time today, I might consider putting these elements together in photoshop, and I might change up my strategy upcoming (because honestly, I never use photoshop any more and I miss it!) For now, I think this is a great way to combine reference photos without feeling as though I am just copying other people’s work.
It is a real struggle sometimes, because I am not a great photographer, and I lack the compositional skills to take a picture that I like enough to render artistically. So for now, this is how I am choosing to Steal — like an artist (Thanks, Austin).
